The It's About Time Writers Reading Series exists for all those who want to write. It is dedicated to the memory of Anna Helfgottt, (1899-1996), a Gray Panther, who began writing after age 70, & to the memory of Nelson Bentley (1918-1990), the quintessential teacher who gave Anna, & scores of others, help & hope. FEATURED SPEAKER ~ Denise Calvetti Michaels on The Writer's Craft -
DENISE CALVETTI MICHAELS teaches Psychology and Human Relations at Cascadia Community College and has received the Crosscurrents Prize for Poetry from the Washington Community and Technical College Humanities Association. In 2001 she and her colleagues at King County Child Care received the Dr. Martin Luther King Humanitarian Award for addressing institutional racism. Her work has appeared in numerous publicatrions, including The Milk of Almonds, Italian American Woman on Food and Culture, Feminist Press, 2002.
WENDY MARCUS' first story was dictated at age 8 to her mother. 45 years later her stories are making their way into national publications. In between, Marcus wrote for newspapers, founded the Northwest's first klezmer revival band, had four kids and landed at Temple Beth Am, where she directs its music programs. She is editor of the Northwest Jewish Review, DRASH.
CRYSTA CASEY once painted a self-portrait in a broken mirror. She has been publishsed in "when it rains from the ground up," "Seattle Review," Arkansas/Kansas uarterly," "Monthly Review," "Fine Madness," "Pontoon," and others. Her first book is "Heart Clinic" (Bellowing Ark Press, 1993).
PESHA JOYCE GERTLER, Seattle's 2005-2006 Poet Populist, is working on a poetry memoir focused on her Jewish feminist identity. She teaches "Self Discovery for Women through Creative Writing," an ongoing workshop that she created in 1981 and which continues to thrive. She teaches at the U.W. Women's Center and at various venues in the Seattle area.
