The It's About Time Writers Reading Series exists for all those who want to write. It is dedicated to the memory of Anna Helfgottt, (1899-1996), a Gray Panther, who began writing after age 70, & to the memory of Nelson Bentley (1918-1990), the quintessential teacher who gave Anna, & scores of others, help & hope. It's About Time is dedicated to an end of racism, homelessness, anti-semitism, homophobia & war. - Esther Altshul Helfgott, Denise Calvetti Michaels, Diane Westergaard, coordinators
FEATURED SPEAKER ~ JED MYERS ~ on THE WRITER'S CRAFT
Jed Myers is a Seattle poet and musician/singer/songwriter, who makes his living as a psychiatrist in the practice of psychotherapy. He won the Writers' Haven Press award in 2004, took 3rd Prize in the Bart Baxter Poetry in Performance contest in 2005, was recent contributing guest editor for Chrysanthemum, and is on the Board of Washington Poets Association. His work has been featured on NPR, and in journals including Poetica and Raven Chronicles, in collections like Tattoos on Cedar, on websites including Satya Center and Friends Journal, and in e-zines such as e-ZAAPP and Tempozine. He has performed in many settings, including City Hall, the Frye Art Museum, and the main stage at the annual Burning Word Poetry Festival on Whidbey Island. Forthcoming are poems in Drash and Fugue. He regularly hosts NorthEndForum, an every-Monday-evening gathering of poets, musicians, and other artists and interested parties, salon-style, in the lounge at Bai Pai, a Thai restaurant in Ravenna.
C.R. Manley grew up in Pennsylvania and moved westward as he earned several geology degrees. He has work forthcoming in Isotope (nonfiction) and Plainsongs (poetry). His writing and photography have also appeared in American Mineralogist, Arnazella, Bulletin of Volcanology, Frogpond, Iris, Paragraph, Plainswoman, Pontoon, Quick Fiction, South Dakota Review, Windfall, and Wisteria. He lives in Bellevue with his wife and daughter, far enough from Mt. Rainier as to be out of harm's way.
Ina Gilles has published over thirty articles and interviews in publications including Queen Anne News and Bellowing Ark. Gilles earned her bachelor's degree in philosophy at University of Puget Sound, and a master's degree in music at University of Washington. She has studied creative writing with noted poets, authors and screenwriters including Nelson Bentley, James Frey, Robert Ray and Stewart Stern. Gilles served on the board of the literary magazine at the Annie Wright School, and won an Honor's Club essay contest at the University of Puget Sound. She has completed two novels, a novella and a number of short stories, as well as a thesis on music and emotion. Frequent trips to Europe and India enrich Gilles' writing. She continues exploring world philosophy and art, and is fascinated by how they link directly to issues faced by men and women today.
Michael Dylan Welch is editor/publisher of Tundra: The Journal of the Short Poem (http://hometown.aol.com/welchm/Tundra.html), board member of the Washington Poets Association, and longtime vice president of the Haiku Society of America. His haiku, tanka, and longer poetry has appeared in hundreds of journals and anthologies in more than a dozen languages. He is on the faculty for the 2007 Whidbey Island Writers Conference, and in April some of his poems will appear in a new anthology of baseball haiku published by W. W. Norton.
